Be Still and Take It All In
Hillsborough River State Park| Lakeland Chapter | October 10, 2026
What a beautiful adventure exploring God's creation! Our latest Heavenward Hikes journey took us to Hillsborough River State Park, where we explored the Rapids Trail and Baynard Trail, discovering vibrant colors, breathtaking scenery, and a river showing off its incredible power.
A River Full of Life and Power
One of the most unforgettable sights of today's hike was the Hillsborough River itself. After all the recent rainfall, the river had overflowed its usual banks, with water levels much higher than normal.
The sound of rushing water accompanied us along the trails. The river was full, powerful, and alive with movement. Palm trees leaned toward the water, their fronds touching the flowing current, while the bases of some trees stood surrounded by water.
Along the Rapids Trail, the sound of the water, towering cypress trees, exposed roots, and dense greenery created an unforgettable atmosphere. Every turn seemed to reveal another beautiful view.
Discovering God's Creativity in Every Color
Beyond the impressive river, one of the things that caught our attention was the incredible variety of colors hidden throughout the forest.
We spotted vibrant pink and purple berries, bright orange mushrooms growing on fallen branches, and countless shades of green in the leaves, palms, and surrounding vegetation. From interesting seeds and delicate plants to the wildlife around us, there was so much to discover.
These little details are easy to miss when we're focused on reaching the end of a trail. But when we slow down and really look around, we begin to notice just how extraordinary God's creation truly is.
Even the smallest mushroom or cluster of berries seemed like a reminder that our Creator pays attention to every detail.
Unexpected Detours Along the Trails
Of course, not everything went exactly as planned, but that's part of the adventure!
A portion of the Rapids Trail remained closed due to damage from a previous hurricane, reminding us of the lasting impact these storms can have on Florida's natural landscapes.
We also made our way along the Baynard Trail, but about halfway through, the muddy conditions became too challenging to continue safely. With the recent heavy rainfall leaving sections of the trail extremely wet, we decided to turn around.
While we couldn't complete everything we had originally hoped to explore, the unexpected detours didn't take away from the experience. If anything, they reminded us that hiking isn't always about reaching the end of a trail. Sometimes it's about enjoying the journey, adapting to what comes our way, and appreciating what we discover along the way.
Another highlight was the park's beautiful suspension bridge, surrounded by towering trees and lush vegetation. It was a wonderful spot to pause, take photographs, and enjoy the character of this historic Florida park.
Despite the mud, flooding, and trail closures, Hillsborough River State Park was absolutely beautiful and certainly worth visiting.
Our Trail Verse: Psalm 46:10
"Be still, and know that I am God."
What a meaningful verse for a morning like this!
Standing near the overflowing river, listening to the powerful sound of rushing water, brought an interesting contrast to the words "Be still."
The river was anything but still, yet it reminded us that stillness isn't always about what's happening around us. It's about the condition of our hearts and our willingness to pause, trust God, and recognize His presence.
Sometimes we need to step away from our busy routines, walk beneath the trees, listen to the sounds of nature, and remember who created it all.
Every Trail Has Something to Teach Us
Today's hike wasn't about perfect trail conditions or completing every mile we had planned. It was about embracing the adventure, appreciating the unexpected, and sharing meaningful moments together.
The muddy paths, overflowing river, vibrant colors, and beautiful scenery all became part of our story.
And that's what Heavenward Hikes is all about. Walking together, building friendships, discovering God's creation, and finding opportunities to grow in faith with every step.
We left grateful for another beautiful morning, wonderful company, and the reminder that sometimes the most meaningful moments happen when we slow down and simply take it all in.
